Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hillsborough District Curriculum
In English, topics like parts of the speech, punctuation, sentence construction, tenses, inflections and creative writing are worked upon, besides many others literacy skills. Reading is an essential part of the English curriculum where kids start off with reading picture books and move forward to reading bigger story books with complex and advanced vocabulary. Writing is also a significant focus and students are taught how to brainstorm and outline their ideas, draft, edit, revise, and finally present their final work.
In Math, topics like fractions, decimals, volume and area are included. These topics are started off during the grades. Before that, the kids are given a thorough explanation of basic concepts like place values, addition and subtraction until they are perfect and their basic foundation becomes strong enough to start off advanced concepts with them. High school math requirements include one year of Algebra 1, one year of Algebra 2, one year of Geometry, and a fourth year of either pre-Calculus, Business Math, Math Analysis or Calculus.

Chalk Talk: Educational Trips for Kids
Minds of kids are always open for learning and we, as parents must remember to keep their process of learning in continuation at all times. During vacations or during weekends when kids are off from school, instead of making them stay at home watching TV, you can take them out for any educational trip like to a Science or Historical Museum, the State Library or an Art Gallery. These trips will provide knowledge to the young minds and they will develop an interest in these fields. Other ideas where kids can be taken to are local annual festivals, theme parks, circuses and local sporting events. You should make children read out artifacts and other details at such places so they would know about major events, national heroes and poets and famous athletes that have been in history.
