Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nixa District Curriculum
In Math, students are expected to use mental math and estimation strategies to solve them. They learn to find factors for numbers up to 100 and use numbers or shapes to represent patterns with a given rule. They even use two and three dimensional shapes to model and solve real world scenarios. Such skills provide the basis in algebra, geometry, and data analysis that they will learn more about in high school.
The Science curriculum is designed from the Next Generation Science Standards, and brings science concepts and technology together to give students the necessary knowledge and tools to explore real issues in today’s society. Students learn content knowledge in earth science, biology, chemistry and physics, and then get to explore the phenomenon they learn about through experiments, and even learn how to design their own experiments. They also learn how to formulate and test hypotheses and the skills to communicate their lab results and scientific findings.

Chalk Talk: Preventing Summer "Brain Drain"
Whether it’s a winter-time break, spring break, or summer break, students who find themselves outside of their regular academic routine oftentimes forget some of the information learned during the school year. If you are looking for ways to prevent the loss of learning, you have lots of options. There are academic websites that help students to reinforce the skills taught in school, including ABCMouse and Starfall. There are also lots of free or inexpensive Apple and Android apps out there that reinforce specific skills, many organized by grade level. Search for exactly what you want your student to practice with – “2nd grade” or “Geometry.” The best thing you can do for your child over the summer to prevent learning gaps from forming? Hire a tutor. A real live person can offer so much more than an electronic device.
