Alice District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Alice Schools provide an innovative and challenging curriculum for the students of their schools. This curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The framework for learning is organized around core topics in each subject and students are introduced to these broadly during their elementary years and more specifically as they progress. This is beneficial in the other coursework the student take as well, and in the future whether they begin a career after graduation or if they go on to college.

We currently cover the following Alice-area school district: Alice Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alice District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum at Alice Schools includes the study of grammar. Students begin by listening to stories which allows them to hear the way that words go together to help with comprehension. Students then begin to learn about subjects, predicates, nouns, verbs and the other parts of speech. Soon they learn how to place each of these words, either in oral or written forms. From there, they learn how to organize and outline ideas and create structure within longer written assignments.

The schools begin teaching the mathematics curriculum from the first days. This includes teaching students about money. First, students begin to recognize coins by their appearance and learn how much each coin is worth. They then learn how to combine the coins to come up with a total and they learn how to make change. Students are given story problems and simulations where they are able to see how to apply this knowledge in their lives. These skills will aid the students after they finish their education.

Chalk Talk: Sixth-Grade Social Studies

In sixth-grade students begin to go more in-depth in the knowledge and concepts they have built up to this time. The standards of learning vary from state-to-state, but overall, students learn the same general knowledge in sixth-grade. In this grade students learn about Ancient Civilizations, such as Mesopotamia and Samaria. They also learn the importance of linking, sequencing and interpreting facts as they research topics for projects. Along with the research skills, students also learn how to study. This may require the use of a classroom planner. To help a students with their assignments, parents need to ask to view this planner once in a while to make sure that it is being kept up-to-date and that the students learns how to use one properly. With this knowledge parents and students can have a successful year in Social Studies in the sixth-grade.
