Woodlyn District and Curriculum
From Social Studies to Math to Language Arts, Science and others, Ridley School District seeks to provide a solid, grounded education for each of its students. In social studies, kindergarten students start by learning about “Me and My World.” They progress, as they advance in grade level, through topics on school, family, community, Regions of the US, US and Ancient History, European History, and finally Economics, Government, and related topics. This deepening of awareness of the concepts that make the world work prepares students for advanced study and a career of their choosing.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woodlyn District Curriculum
The Ridley School District takes reading, writing and listening skills seriously. Utilizing a workshop model for teaching their students these skills, students in Kindergarten through eighth grade have many hands on learning experiences in the areas of reading, writing and listening. From Read Aloud activities to Independent Reading, from Mini-lessons to Sharing Times where students listen to and discuss what they have done and learned with their classmates, students are able to process and apply these foundational skills.
Students at the high school level are offered Honors, College Prep, AP Level and General Academic courses in many core subjects including science. Here students have the opportunity to prepare for college or career through quality, rigorous courses designed to help them succeed. High school students are also highly encouraged to take elective courses that will help them along their career or vocational goals whether that be in scientific fields, technology fields, the arts, or others.

Chalk Talk: How to Decide on a Career or Vocation
Many students struggle to decide on a career or vocational goal, but the pressure mounts as high school students are encouraged to take courses that prepare them for that goal. So what can you, the high school student, do? First, know that you can change your mind later on. The key is to keep your options open in high school. If you think you may want to go to college, take courses that will prepare you for that, even if you end up deciding not to. Taking College Prep English, as opposed to General English, is an example. Take the science and language courses that will keep your options open. If your school offers a diploma designed to prepare you for college, shoot for those requirements instead of settling for something easier. It may be a bit more work, but at least you have many more options than if you hadn’t done that. After that, with your elective courses, take the classes that most interest you. Electives most likely won’t make or break you, so have fun with them, remembering to keep your options open.
