Dartmouth District and Curriculum
Dartmouth Public Schools are comprised of six schools and over 4,000 students. There are four elementary schools with grades K-5, a middle school, and a high school. Each school within the district has its own mission and vision. The district provides such ancillary services as physical therapy, occupational therapy, adaptive physical education, speech and language pathology, and school psychology. Dartmouth Public Schools have developed a set of “Essential Learnings” for grades K-5 in conjunction with the curriculum.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dartmouth District Curriculum
The “Essential Learnings” are statements of the “big picture” concepts and skills students will and should learn in English language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, instructional technology, and physical education. Examples include reading to learn, understanding that measurements provide a way to investigate the world, and recognizing how our government works as a democracy.
The elementary math curriculum teaches students to understand the concept and relationship between multiplication and division up to 100. Additionally, students use operational and data analysis skills and are introduced to the concept of the area and perimeter of objects and locations. In high school, students learn how to find a rational number that is closest in value to given numbers that are not rational. Teachers explain the relationship between rational numbers, lines, and linear equations; students solve linear equations. They also learn about the concept of shape congruence and how to use formulas and theorem to solve problems.

Keeping Informed: Recent Dartmouth Educational News
- Quinn Students Put On Anti-Bullying Exhibition - Students at Quinn Elementary School culminated a year’s worth of projects and discussions about bullying by holding the Second Annual Museum of Kindness and Caring exhibition. Parents were invited to look at art and listen to music and poetry that celebrated the qualities of kindness and being caring and promoted anti-bullying. The project resulted in the students working together, growing closer to one another, and building a sense of community.
- Marching Band Drums Up National Title - The Dartmouth High School Marching Band finished in first place in its division at the United States Bands National Finals, which were held at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. The Indians, which had 24 seniors on the team, topped 11 competing bands in the standings. Congratulations!
- Dartmouth Middle School Hosts “Dartmouth 350” Celebration - Dartmouth Middle School recently opened its doors to Dartmouth residents to gather for the town’s 350th anniversary. Visitors learned about the rich history of their town and celebrated one of Dartmouth’s military heroes in conjunction with the Memorial Day holiday. The school was a starting point for visitors who wished to take a two-hour bus tour of the town and—in its auditorium—showed a documentary that was partly produced by students at local schools, including Dartmouth High School.

Chalk Talk: What Are Learning Standards?
Teaching candidates working through their education programs learn a great deal about standards and are required to incorporate them in lesson plans and projects. School districts mandate that educators put relevant standards in each lesson plan. This is because standards describe what students should be able to do in each content area at each grade level. Therefore, lesson objectives must align with standards. Most schools allow teachers the freedom to incorporate the learning activities and instructional methods that they choose, but they need to use the appropriate set of standards in guiding their instruction. Until this year, each state had its own set of standards for each content area; however, the national Common Core Standards have emerged. These standards are more rigorous and are said to better prepare students for college and their careers. There has been some concern over implementing a national set of standards when American students live in such diverse areas from the city to farmland to suburbs to near the ocean.
