Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Camillus District Curriculum
Camillus’ math curriculum seeks to develop in students a foundational knowledge of core mathematics concepts. From the earliest grades students learn numeration, problem solving, abstract reasoning, and important communication skills. For instance, students learn to count backwards from 20, count by 10’s, read, write and compare numbers up to 100, the value of pennies, measurement using standard tools, the value of nickels and dimes, and how to add and subtract one digit numbers. They go on to further develop these skills and learn to apply them to real-world situations as the move up through future grades.
Camillus’ English Language Arts curriculum requires students at all grade-levels to be capable of reading a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction tests. Students not only read such texts, but learn how to research, discuss, and critique those texts. Students learn how to apply these skill in Language Arts classrooms, and then go on to apply the skills in all other subjects.

Chalk Talk: Testing Blues
Any parent who has had a child in elementary school in the past 15 years is familiar with the first test jitters. These are the fears felt by young students who, just as they are becoming confident in their reading, writing, and math skills, find out they have a really IMPORTANT test to take. Of course, parents understand that the outcome of standardized tests are more important to schools and school funding than they are to students, but that’s not easy to explain to a third grader. The best thing a parent can do when it comes to first test jitters is stay calm. Nervousness can be contagious. If your child sees that you’re worried about him or her being worried, he or she will start to think that the test is a bigger deal than it actually is. Also, remind your child that he or she is being tested on information that he or she already knows. This will help calm your child’s fears about being tested on information that he or she does not know.
