Onondaga District and Curriculum
Both the Onondaga Central School District and the Westhill Central School district serve the town of Onondaga, New York. The Westhill Central School District has over 2,000 students and operates one primary school, one elementary school, and one high school. The Onondaga Central School district has 950 students and operates two elementary schools and one junior/senior high school. The schools offer students instruction in a wide range of challenging and interesting classes. Instruction in schools’ math and English Language arts classes is based on research-based Common Core Standards. Instruction in all other subject areas, including science, social studies, and music, is based on the New York State Learning Standards.
We currently cover the following Onondaga-area school districts: Onondaga Central School District and Westhill Central School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Onondaga District Curriculum
Onondaga’s math instruction is guided by a curriculum that seeks to instill in young students knowledge of core mathematics concepts. The curriculum refines and develops students’ knowledge of these concepts as they move up through subsequent grades, producing students who are capable of applying mathematics knowledge at a college- and career-level by the time they graduate high school.
Onondaga’s English Language Arts instruction is guided by a curriculum that has as its goal producing students who can not only read closely and attentively in fiction and non-fiction, but also producing students who research the texts they read, critique those texts, and communicate their ideas about those texts to others. Students are also introduced to the workshop model of writing, where a piece of writing is developed from idea through publication. Students work on brainstorming and organizing ideas, writing, editing and peer editing, revising, and finally publish their work using a range of technology or media to enhance it.

Keeping Informed: Recent Onondaga Educational News
- Students Inducted into Technical Honor Society - Two Onondaga students have been recognized for their achievements. Both have been inducted into the Onondaga-Midland-Cortland Board of Cooperative Educational Services (OMC BOCES) Technical Honor Society. One student is part of the OMC BOCES Laboratory Technician program, and the other is pursuing the OMC BOCES Health Occupations Technology Program.
- Performing Arts Events - Onondaga Hill Middle School students recently wrapped up their performances of ‘Suessical the Musical’, which was directed by music teacher Kathleen Tompkins. The performances raised $1,500 dollars. Students donated the money to the Westhill Educational Foundation.
- 21st Century Learning Continuum - So that families can understand what the district means when they say they seek to achieve 21st Century learning skills, the district has published an overview of the curricular goals in this area. They cover topics such as creativity, social responsibility, and collaboration and explain what skills within these areas are expected in the students.

Chalk Talk: Financial Education
A student can excel in all subjects beginning in kindergarten and going all the way through high school and still not know basic things that he or she will need to know to get along in the world. He or she can develop literacy in all subject areas and still fall short when it comes to financial literacy, something that all students should possess. Financial literacy is more than having money and knowing the dollar value of specific items. Financial literacy is a point of view, a collection of critical thinking skills, and firm control over one’s actions. This is something that can be taught in schools without getting into controversial topics such as who has the most money, or who has the better future. Teachers already teach the monetary value of coins and bills in the early grades. While they are doing that, they can also talk about where money comes from, how people spend it, and what happens when it stops flowing. This will not only prepare students for those unexpected events that pop up in, but it also will get them thinking about best ways to use money.
