Fishkill District and Curriculum
Fishkill, New York, is part of Wappingers Central School District. The district operates 10 elementary schools, two junior high schools, two high schools, and one alternative school. Fishkill schools follow English Language Arts and math curricula that are based on rigorous, research-based standards that the state of New York adopted in 2011. The schools’ curricula in all other classes, including social studies, art, and science, are based on state specific standards that New York adopted for all its students.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fishkill District Curriculum
Fishkill schools’ English Language arts curriculum encourages students to develop the abilities to read closely and attentively beginning in the early grades. Following this curriculum, students go on to learn other important literacy skills such as listening, verbal communication, research, and textual analysis. They learn about literary devices used in literature and also see how these same devices – such as symbolism and foreshadowing – are also seen in media works. This helps students become more critical of the media they view.
Fishkill schools’ math curriculum encourages to learn core mathematics concepts in the earliest grades. Following this curriculum, students go on to further their understanding of these core concepts as they move up through subsequent grades. Students then learn to apply their mathematics knowledge to classroom and real world problems. This helps achieve the goal of the development of quantitative and logical reasoning skills that can be applied to any abstract problem.

- Healthy Changes - There’s a healthy change coming to a Wappingers school. The Gayhead Elementary School faculty is asking that, beginning in the 2014-1015 school year, parents no longer bring cupcakes and sweets to in-school birthday celebrations.
- FBLA District Competition - Ten John Jay High School students won awards at the Future Business Leaders of America Spring District Competition. The students competed in events related to business activities including, sports management, accounting, public speaking, and interviewing.
- Local Elks Honor Students - Nine Roy C. Ketchum High School Students will receive Elks Awards. The students are being honored for their work in the community and their academic accomplishments. They will be honored at an upcoming dinner.

Chalk Talk: Developing Literacy Skills
Literacy is the foundational learning skill. Students who are not literate or who have problems with literacy have a much harder time mastering new learning skills than students who have high literacy levels. That is why it is important to get students to develop literacy early. One way to get reluctant readers to develop their literacy skills is to reward them for reading. Some parents do not like the idea of rewarding a child for reading. They think that the child should read because he or she loves reading. It would be nice if it happened that way all the time, but it does not. Some children need incentive beyond “love of reading.” A parent who is dealing with a child who needs extra incentive should develop a reading reward system that is based on number of pages read or total time read. A child who sees a reward in his or her future is more likely to read, and a child who is more likely to read is more likely to develop important literacy skills.
