Students in Nitro, West Virginia attend local schools within the Kanawha County Schools district. Students learn in accordance with the Next Generation guidelines set out by the West Virginia Department of Education. Students are taught with an understanding that modern technology and course instruction is essential for students to be adequately prepared for life beyond high school. Students are offered varieties of courses within these guidelines to ensure that each student gets the education that they need for their individual career or vocational goals.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Nitro District Curriculum
Beginning at the elementary school, students are grounded in core studies where they concentrate on reading, writing, spelling and handwriting within their English studies. They also learn social studies, science, mathematics, physical education, art and music. Students are exposed to many aspects of education so that key concepts and fundamental skills sets in all subjects are introduced early and help to make the transitions into higher grades easier as students will draw upon this learning.
High school students are offered AP and Honors classes to more adequately prepare them for college. They are required to take four years of English, four years of math, four years of science and four years of social studies. They also must take a year each of Physical Education, health, and classes within in the art categories, half a year each of speech and computer applications courses, two years of foreign languages, and four to six classes that assist students in their career concentrations.

Unlike high school, textbooks are not given to you to use for the year. Renting them online or buying them used ahead of time from sources such as EBay and Amazon can save you a lot of money. If you are paying for your books using financial aid, you may need to buy them through the school bookstore, however. If buying them through there, find out if there is a book swap at your school and look for used books if you need to cut costs. Finally, show up for orientation and classes. Listen carefully to instructions and get ready to enjoy an exciting new year of education.
