Chalk Talk: Deciding Whether to Skip a Grade

There are times when a child seems to be doing exceptionally well in school when a parent, or teacher, entertains the idea of allowing the child to skip a grade. When making this decision, parents need to take specific steps to decide if this is wise. First of all, have an evaluation done of the child’s work and a psychological evaluation to see if the child could handle this change emotionally and academically. Then decide whether the child is motivated to skip a grade, or if this is solely the parent’s opinion. Another aspect to consider when thinking about allowing a child to skip a grade is the timing. Many times beginning a new class should occur at the beginning of the school year, but in order to gain the support of both teachers, this type of switch may be more beneficial in the middle of the year. Finally, realize that a child does not need to stay in a new classroom if it does not feel comfortable.
