St. Thomas District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
In St. Thomas, the schools follow the curriculum developed by the Ministry of Education, the Ontario Curriculum. This is a framework that describes the expected learning goals within all subjects at every grade level. The standards of learning provide the basis for proficiency in the subject. The Ontario Curriculum supports teachers in their professional growth, focuses the curriculum across district schools, and promotes consistency in student learning. The curriculum also highlights specific collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving thinking skills in relation to the subjects that foster them.
We currently cover the following St. Thomas-area school districts: Thames Valley District School Board and London District Catholic School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the St. Thomas District Curriculum
Students learn according to the design of the Ontario Curriculum which focuses on core academics and contains strong program frameworks for language immersion, arts, international learning, and career specialization courses. The Ontario Curriculum also describes the higher-order thinking skills that students will develop during their subject area studies. Major concepts in science like systems, interdependence, change, and continuity stem from the content knowledge and the curriculum describes the concepts students should become literate in.
In English Language Arts, students are able to develop a host of literacy and communication skills that help them to learn and speak about any subject. The reading requires students to perform basic comprehension so that they are able to perform more complex analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. They learn about structure and language choice which help them to analyze the purpose of a text. Students also learn how to find information and evaluate their trustworthiness.

Chalk Talk: What to Expect as a Sophomore
When teens reach this age, they aren’t any longer the smallest students at school. Along with this realization comes responsibility, self-knowledge and freedom. During this time, these students will face driver’s ed, and new dating situations. Along with this freedom, some students have difficulty with the new responsibilities such as curfews, and the consequences if broken. Or other situations when they need to learn about earning privileges. These students are discovering who they are, so they seem to bounce from extreme to extreme during this time. What is a good idea, for them, today may be out of the question tomorrow. Teens need to have conversations, usually by phone or text messages. This can cause problems within the family. Set guidelines, such as no socializing until after the homework is done. Just remember that there are exceptions to every rule.
