Cape Breton District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The schools of Cape Breton use the curriculum devised by the Department of Education as the framework for expected learning outcomes for the students. The curriculum is referred to as the Learning Outcomes Framework and it describes what students should learn in order to be proficient in their subjects. The learning outcomes, or standards of learning, allow for flexibility and creativity in lesson design by teachers. There are many ways to foster the essential knowledge within the subjects, the curriculum provides the expected end results from quality instruction.
We currently cover the following Cape Breton-area school districts: Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board, Strait Regional School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cape Breton District Curriculum
The English Language Arts curriculum emphasizes reading strategies that will help students learn about the world and understand differing viewpoints. Students learn how to decode the meaning of words, phrases, and later, increasingly complex sentence structures found in literary works. In non-fiction, firsthand and secondhand sources are used to contrast the manner in which authors view the same event and the manner in which they retell it. Becoming a better reader of informational texts includes interpreting visual aids as well. Students work with timelines, graphs, charts, and other visual aids to determine how they support or clarify the position of the author.
The Science curriculum introduces students to earth science, chemistry and physics, biology, and environmental science. In high school, these are full year courses in which students conduct in-depth study on topics like DNA and heredity in biology, or the study of an ecosystem in environmental science. Instilling the process of scientific inquiry is also central to the curriculum; students should be able to form a hypothesis, test and observe it, keep notes and prepare reports on their observations, and arrive at a conclusion as to the validity of their hypothesis.

Chalk Talk: School Fundraisers
Fundraising is a regular event at most schools, and they go a long way in supporting worthy causes. Planning them, however, should not be stressful. First, collect the necessary equipment, such as balloons and a helium tank, a popcorn popper, paper and a printer, etc. Ask volunteers to create and distribute flyers, purchase and make food, and donate and run the equipment. Games are an important aspect of a carnival, so be prepared to put together a variety of engaging activities for many age groups. You can’t have a carnival without prizes, so ask volunteers for these as well. Community businesses can donate goods and services to advertise and support your cause. Music and other entertainment is also a part of the festivities. Hire a local band or a disc jockey to play music. Will clowns, jugglers, or other entertainers help add flare to your event? Whatever you choose to do, nothing is over the top as long as you make a profit.
