Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bay City District Curriculum
The Bay City Public Schools system puts a lot of focus on a strong beginning to a child’s education by offering both daycare and preschool programs before students attend elementary school. These programs concentrate on providing literacy-rich activities while exposing young children to other subjects through play. Once students reach elementary school, the curriculum focuses strongly on Reading, Writing, and Math. Grades K-3 use a Dolch Sight Word List to practice reading high frequency words while the upper grades put more focus on analyzing what was read.
High school students begin to choose classes based more on their interests and future career goals. The schools offer students the chance to earn college credit with its dual enrollment program. Another option is the cultural exchange program for students who are interested in a real-life study of a foreign language or country. High school students may choose from a range of electives such as languages and technical classes.

Chalk Talk: What Are 21st Century Skills?
Listen in on any school board meeting and you will probably hear the term, “21st Century Skills”, thrown around a few times. But, what does 21st Century Skills really mean? When the American education system began, it was in a time of industrialization and the skills incorporated matched those of the technology available. However, our current school system has not quite caught up to today’s ever-changing technologies. 21st Century Skills include the ability to work collaboratively as a team as well as work independently. Problem solving is also a major focus of these skills as new technology is created and the need to repair it becomes an issue. Another major concentration is the ability to think and collaborate globally across different cultures. Technology has opened the world to businesses and graduating students need to have the skills to communicate with people from around the world. Assuring that students have the skills necessary to navigate the 21st Century is at the core of these new educational standards.
