Leamington District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The curriculum used in the schools of Leamington is the Ontario Curriculum. This is a curricular framework that is designed based on research into national and international best practices of setting standards and expectations. The framework covers all the academic subjects and describes what it is that students need to learn in order to thoroughly understand a subject. In addition to describing the general skills within each subject area, the curriculum describes how these skills will foster higher-level thinking skills. Students are also offered a wide range of extracurricular activities, as well as interest-based and career-oriented electives.
We currently cover the following Leamington-area school districts: Greater Essex County District School Board, Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Leamington District Curriculum
The curriculum aligns various mathematical skills to the problem-solving and reasoning skills they foster and provides similar direction within the other subjects. Geometric constructions are studied, and students learn to understand congruence specifically in terms of rigid motions. Equations and geometry are paired as well, with students learning how to use coordinates to prove theorems algebraically. By designing learning outcomes that address basic knowledge and the growth towards advanced conceptual learning students become prepared for the next steps in their education.
Beyond reading and writing, students also work on asking and answering questions, describing people, places, and events, and drawing conclusions based upon the messages received from other speakers. This is also done with reading and writing. Students focus on presenting information to others through various presentational means, such as creating a slideshow or giving a speech. Using appropriate tone, intonation, and nonverbal cues is learned as well.

Chalk Talk: Classroom Games
Jeopardy is a widely popular TV game show and is also a very common review game that teachers use in their classrooms. It is a great game to use because it allows teachers to split up questions both into categories and difficulty level. This will motivate students, as they have some control in what kind of questions they choose to answer. Also, with some questions being worth more than others, students may be more enticed to select more challenging questions to answer. Sorting questions into categories can also give teachers and students a clearer picture as to which content students know well and what they need to examine more closely. Jeopardy is extremely versatile; it can be used for virtually any content area and topic.
