Keeping Informed: Recent Orangeville Educational News

  • Parental Involvement Opportunities - Parents from around the district participate in many advisory and fundraising events in partnership with the district. They have hosted a Fundraising Fair that will bring together a range of ideas and supports for effective fundraising for the school community. Look for information on the district website.
  • Community Involvement - Students participate in a range of outreach experiences and extracurricular activities during school. They now have to complete 40 hours of community service work, however there are opportunities to create an original plan for a student's community involvement project.
  • Aboriginal Heritage Festival - This annual festival features a wealth of native art, music and crafts. There are speakers and other events, all proceeds of which go to a local public health charity. Community members who would like to get involved with the festival are welcome to contact organizers.

Chalk Talk: Behaviorism and Reinforcement

One way teachers can use positive reinforcement is to reward good behavior with tangible rewards, such as homework passes, stickers, candy, etc. It is important that rewards be used sparingly because if they are overused, students’ motivation will be misdirected—they will be motivated to behave and perform certain ways in order to receive a tangible reward, not because they are intrinsically motivated. Meanwhile, negative reinforcement can help strengthen desired behaviors by removing negative stimuli. For example, when a student completes his/her homework (the wanted behavior), the teacher removes the bad grade (the negative stimulus). It is important to note that negative reinforcement is very different from punishment. While the goal of negative reinforcement is to increase a positive behavior by removing something negative, punishment involves decreasing a negative behavior by applying a negative consequence.
