Woodway District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Keswick use the Ontario Curriculum which is a research-based, standards-oriented approach to curriculum design. The Ontario Curriculum provides a framework of the skills and knowledge that students need to develop in their subjects each year. Beyond that, the Curriculum describes what higher-order thinking skills students will develop in conjunction to their subject area learning. For instance, when students learn about the writing process and develop their own processes, they are developing a range of self-reflective and critical thinking skills. Or, when students study Algebra they gain a number of different problem-solving approaches. The Curriculum specifies which thinking skills and concepts students will develop alongside the basic content knowledge of a subject.

We currently cover the following Keswick-area school districts: York Region District School Board and York Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Keswick District Curriculum

The Science curriculum teaches students both content and the processes of being a scientist. Hands on learning that allows students to formulate and test hypotheses are integrated into the curriculum from elementary to secondary school. In the geology strand, various natural structures are studied, including dikes, batholiths, sills, and pegmatites. The role of stress and pressure on the formation of metamorphic rocks is explored, as is the role of temperature and compressional forces. Students also learn where metamorphic zones can be found throughout the globe.

To help students prepare for success in the global economy, a world languages curriculum exists so that students can achieve fluency in a second or third language by graduation. There are immersion programs that teach all academic content in both English and the target language and there are traditional courses at all levels where students approach language learning by learning the grammar and vocabulary first and then approaching more advanced literacy and speaking skills.

Chalk Talk: Field Trips

Students may take school field trips on a yearly basis. These field trips may consist of such places as museums, zoos, historical landmarks, news stations, theaters, etc. Getting ready for a field trip is exciting but can make for a little bit of extra preparation. Parents will of course have to make sure they either submitted a lunch request for a school lunch or pack their child's lunch in a brown bag (typically, lunch boxes are not permitted on field trips). It is also important for students to dress in comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Particularly if the field trip takes place outdoors, students need to have clothing on that is appropriate for the weather. Parents shouldn't be nervous about their children going on field trips, as principals and teachers put a lot of time into organizing field trips, enlisting chaperones, grouping students, and coming up with an attendance system for making sure all are accounted for.
