Chalk Talk: Helping Your Junior High Student Learn to Study
Junior high students are just beginning to receive a heavier course load, more responsibility and more depth in their studies not to mention all the physical and emotional changes that they must navigate. As parents or guardians, you can assist your student in these many challenges by helping them study more effectively than they may have needed to in the past. Now is the time to bring out skill sets such as using mnemonic devices for remembering information. You can help your child learn the skill of studying. Teach them the tricks you use to remember numbers, street names, work information, etc. Your child can utilize flashcards, timelines, songs and even act out information to remember it. They can also learn to set aside time for homework and other time for play to better manage their homework load and keep them on task during homework and study time. Junior high is the time to learn and perfect these skills so that in high school and college they will be able to get the full benefits from them.
