San Jose District and Curriculum

The curriculum used in the schools of San Jose has been developed to provide a standards-based education for students; this model has been well-received because of its method of setting clear and achievable standards which can be measured on subject-area tests. The assessments that students take also help educators to see the areas where instruction needs to be increased for all students.

Each subject has a curriculum developed that covers what skills, concepts and principles, and learning strategies students should learn each year. For English/Language Arts and Math, students throughout California follow the Common Core Standards which address the major content areas within the subjects.

I believe that all children can learn – socially, intellectually, and internally. Relationships with teachers have a huge impact on that learning. Students, in order to feel supported, need assistance with setting goals and how to reach them.
It is important to look at each student as a separate entity with varied interests, skills, and experience and thereby requiring a significant amount of individual attention. Hence, as a teacher, I will analyze, understand, encourage, and appreciate the thought process of my students, and consequentially evaluate individual strengths and weaknesses. I will focus on vivid elucidation of the subject matter, so that the students have a clear understanding of both concepts and solution methods.
Every person has the capability of learning and mastering any type of curriculum, given that they are willing to practice it and seek guidance from others who can help them, such as teachers and tutors. I don’t believe that there is such thing as a stupid question. Often times, a student is afraid to ask for help because they may feel embarrassed for not having grasped a certain concept, or think that they simply will never be able to understand that concept.

Chalk Talk: Making Friends in University

The transition from high school to university is very tough for many. The reason for this is because we’ve already grown familiar with the small group of students in high school with friends who took the same classes as you. The transition over to a large campus with much more people makes one feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. Once you all graduate high school and move onto different pathways, you will feel as if you lost your friends and a great wave of loneliness will come over you. Just know that this is only normal.

The first step is understanding that you are not the only one who is feeling lonely in this new setting. All the other first year students are also transitioning from one setting to another. Some may have come overseas, far from their families, or just moved in from a neighbouring city. Regardless, we all feel lonely. If you are living on campus, this would be the perfect chance to make friends. By just hanging out in the halls or visiting the cafeteria can include lots of interactions with the students around you and opportunities for friendship to arise.
