Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wilton District Curriculum
Instruction in Wilton schools’ math classes is based on standards that develop students’ understanding of core mathematics concepts such as problem solving, numeracy, and pattern recognition. The standards introduce students to these concepts in the earliest grades, and then go on to further develop students’ knowledge of the concepts as students move up grade-by-grade. Mathematical literacy is also emphasized and students are expected to be adept at working with word problems and explaining their own mathematical thinking.
Instruction in Wilton schools’ English Language Arts classes is based on standards that require students to be capable of both reading and comprehending fiction and non-fiction texts. After students master these basic literacy skills, the standards require them to develop higher-level literacy skills such as research, textual interpretation and analytic criticism, and communicating both verbally and in writing.

Chalk Talk: Encouraging Writing at Home
These days there are few parents who do not take an interest in their children’s reading education. They make sure kids read books that are on the right reading level for the kids. But what about writing? Do parents make sure that kids do the right kind of writing, and that they write things that are on their writing level? Parents should encourage kids to write more at home. Parents can encourage them to take a few minutes to write a silly story, or to take a little longer and write about their day. When children are first learning to read, they can dictate a story to the parent and then illustrate the final product. To develop reflective and self-analytic skills, children can journal, which gives them time to write and will be when they have a natural desire to learn more about writing or language. Whatever the kids do, they will be practicing writing, and a little writing practice will make a big difference in later years.
