Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Parma District Curriculum
Parma schools offer students English Language Arts and Math classes that are based on the Common Core Standards which have been approved and adopted by the state of New York. All other classes, including science, art, music, and the career-technical programs are based on the New York State Learning Standards. Parma’s English Language Arts curriculum is based on standards that require students to be able to read and comprehend both digital and physical fiction and non-fiction texts. There is an increased emphasis on non-fiction so that students have literacy skills they can apply in all subjects.
Parma’s math curriculum is based on standards that require students to become familiar with core mathematics concepts such as shape recognition, measurement, pattern recognition, and problem solving in the earliest grades. The science curriculum introduces content in biology, earth and environmental science, physical science, and technology.

Chalk Talk: Literacy and Technology
There is a constant stream of articles, blog posts, and discussions about why children do not read and write like they used to. Of course, these claims are true, but they are somewhat accurate. Children do not read as many books as they once did, nor do they write as many letters as they once did. However, that does not mean that they are not reading and writing. They still read. In fact, with reading articles and text online, texts from friends, video game text, and digital and physical books, kids probably read more now than they ever have. The same goes for writing. Sure, kids aren’t spending a lot of time sitting around with pens and paper, but they are texting friends, commenting on online content, and writing at school. No matter what you think about how they are writing, it’s hard to argue that they are not writing. Today’s kids live in a world that is very different from the one we lived in as kids. That they do things differently than we did should not come as a surprise.
