Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sullivan District Curriculum
Sullivan’s English Language Arts curriculum is based on standards that require students to develop communication and literacy skills such as reading and reading comprehension. The standards use these skills as a base on which to develop literacy skills that students can apply to other subject areas. These skills include critical thinking, listening to others interpretations, and communicating effectively. As students become more proficient readers, the texts also become more complex as do the skills needed to read the text.
Sullivan’s math curriculum is based on standards that introduce students to mathematics concepts such as numerical problem solving, shape recognition and measurement, and pattern recognition in the earliest grades. Middle school and high school students integrate these applications into their Science curriculum with courses such as Engineering and Chemistry. Students may extend their learning by taking higher level courses that dig deeper into strands including Calculus and Algebra.

Chalk Talk: Beyond Core Academics
Reading, writing, and math are the building blocks of a good education. However, they are not the extent of education. Education comes in many different forms that are not always recognized within the confines of a classroom. A child who is going to grow up to be a good citizen who contributes to society needs to possess knowledge that goes beyond building blocks. He or she needs to have a wide range of knowledge and interests that will allow him or her to discuss politics, art, music, business, and history. These are not subjects that a child will pick up naturally. He or she has to be introduced to them, has to be given the opportunity to become interested in them. As parents, it is our job to fill out this part of our children’s education. We need to show them that they need to take an interests in politics, art, music, business, and history by taking an interest in those things ourselves. Our children will follow our lead, and will become adults who have something to offer the world that has so much to offer them.
