Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bay City District Curriculum
Mathematics at Bay City Independent School District enables students to look at equations and know the steps that are needed to solve them. They begin by learning how to combine sets of numbers through different manipulatives then with paper and pencil. Then they learn how to write equations for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As they become more skilled in the fundamentals they begin to learn algebra, geometry, statistics and calculus.
Reading and writing are each part of the Language Arts curriculum at Bay City Independent School District. Students discover how to master each of these hand-in-hand. Students begin by listening to different readings to discover what makes each of them different. Then they find the way to form words to share the information from the book to others in their class. They also use various works of literature to show them how authors use different words to convey the meaning they desire in a work. This allows the student to use these examples in their writing.

Chalk Talk: Middle School Social Studies
In middle school, children begin to change in many different ways. This can be exhausting for anybody, as it is for these students. This means that when students are sitting still in a classroom they may become tired very easily. With a little heads-up as to what to expect, parents can help these children succeed. Standards may differ from state to state, but generally students will learn about ancient civilizations during this year, including geography, climate and landmarks of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and more. In sixth grade they also learn how to link and sequence events as well and interpret them. Talk with the children about what they are learning. If they do not share, talk with their teacher to find out what topics are being discussed. They also will need to have a planner, or assignment book, this year. There are quite a few reading and writing assignments along with project. Working with the student to make sure they are keeping up on assignments, or that they have broken down a research project into parts, will help the student succeed.
