Chalk Talk: Educational Jargon: Free or Reduced Lunch

If a student’s parent(s) or guardian(s)’s income is below a certain threshold, he/she may be eligible to receive a daily lunch that is reduced in price or no cost at all in the cafeteria in most public schools in the United States. Schools will send out forms at the beginning of each year that collect such information in order to determine if students are eligible. School districts often report the percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch in the district, providing information as to the diversity of students in terms of socioeconomic status (SES). Of course, a district that has, say, 40 percent of its students receiving free or reduced lunch is more diverse in terms of SES than one with eight percent of children qualifying. Districts situated in urban and rural areas typically see much higher percentages than suburban schools. In addition, schools that do not provide breakfast for all its students do often offer free breakfast for students whose families have financial struggles if they come to school early.
