Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Malta District Curriculum

Instruction in Malta’s English Language Arts classes is based on standards that seek to help students develop a range of literacy skills that they can apply to work in all subject areas. Instruction in Malta’s math classes is based on standards that seek to develop students’ knowledge of fundamental mathematics concepts such a numeracy, problem modeling, and abstract thinking. Integrated into all subjects is the development of literacy skills so that students have strong math literacy and can translate word problems into a numerical solution.

Science and Social Studies are also subjects that will be more specialized in middle and high school. Some of the Science courses offered include Chemistry, Oceanography, and Biology. Chalk Talk: Making Friends

Most children find that going to schools gives them their first chance to live and make decision without their parents’ help. This has many benefits for both children and parents. However, it also comes with problems. One problem that comes up again and again is the problem of kids making friends on their own. Often children choose their school friends based on who impresses them the most and who gets the majority of their attention. Parents need to talk to their children about choosing school friends. They need to let children know about the kind of trouble that one bad friend can bring into their lives. If parents have a personal experience of choosing a bad friend they should share it with their children. This will let their children know that everybody makes mistakes when choosing friends, and that it is easy to get past those mistakes.
