Chesapeake Beach District and Curriculum
The Calvert County Public Schools uses a comprehensive, standards-based curriculum to educate all the students. The Common Core Standards have been adopted in Math and Language Arts, and all subjects have increased the rigor of the standards and focused them on key knowledge within the major topics of the subjects. Students also gain valuable learning experience through community service, character education, and work learning programs, which all also follow a curriculum that lays out the goals and expectations for students to meet.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Chesapeake Beach District Curriculum
The language arts curriculum places a major emphasis on reading, and contains objectives to ensure that students are learning how to read both fiction and non-fiction from elementary school on. Students are expected to learn how to recognize different text features, use context clues to understand new words, and look for the point of view or intent of an author. This develops their critical reading skills and ensures that students are able to develop literacy in other topics.
Writing is a major portion of the curriculum, and has become a section of the ACT and SAT as well. Students learn how to craft essays, state a main point, and support their point with logically sequenced supporting evidence. They also learn to write for different purposes, such as persuasive, analytic, informational, and of course, creative. Students are expected to develop a process approach to writing that includes brainstorming, drafting, editing and revising, and finally presenting a final version of their work.

Keeping Informed: Recent Chesapeake Beach Educational News
- CHESPAX - CHESPAX is a program in environmental learning designed for the Maryland's young students and that integrates awareness of the Bay and its ecological issues. Students are able to engage in many hands-on learning opportunities that helps instill these lessons.
- Service Learning - Students in the district have a special program in service learning which requires that all students complete 75 hours of community service as a requirement of graduation. This curriculum helps students learn how to engage in community activities and recognize some of their personal strengths.
- Peer Mediation - For students who are interested in conflict resolution, peer mediation offers them a first chance at applying their interest to real world situations. Students are able to help other students resolve minor conflicts and have many chances to learn about conflict resolution techniques.

As students go through school, they are introduced to curriculum and learning expectations that are beyond the scope of learning their regular academic classes. For instance, most districts have a character education curriculum that is used throughout the school to instill a sense of morals, interpersonal skills and leadership to students. Many districts also use a service learning curriculum that is meant to tie together activities students do as volunteers or on awareness campaigns with the development of life skills that help kids connect to their community. For students in high school, there are also opportunities to conduct independent studies, which although the student gets to determine the nature of their project, a curriculum will scaffold the expectations for research and presentation of the work, which develops critical skills students will use in college and beyond.
