Melrose District and Curriculum
Melrose Public Schools contain seven schools and 3,750 students. There are five elementary schools with grades K-5, a middle school, and a high school. Melrose Public Schools use a combination of the 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the Common Core Standards. These standards have three goals: to prepare students for college and their careers, for there to be coherence and a clear sequence as to the learning from grade to grade, and to challenge students to use critical thinking skills in order to help them succeed in a 21st century society.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Melrose District Curriculum
At Melrose, the English language arts education focuses on reading, speaking and listening, writing, language, written and oral expression, analytic reading, vocabulary, and media study. There is a particular emphasis placed on writing, as students in all English courses are exposed to various rich writing experiences. In mathematics, elementary students use the Pearson EnVision Math series that balances skills practice with problem-based interactive learning.
The philosophy of this program revolves around developing conceptual understanding in math, providing ongoing assessment and subsequently the necessary interventions, and differentiating instruction to fit the needs of all students. The topics that are covered in math are categorized by strands that center in on Big Ideas and Essential Understandings—the keys to allowing students to recognize connections between mathematical ideas across units of study.

Keeping Informed: Recent Melrose Educational News
- New Textbooks, New Learning - This year, Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School replaced its old social studies textbooks from the ‘90s with new ones published by National Geographic. The new textbooks require students to use higher order thinking skills, such as inferring—a drastic improvement from the former textbooks that mostly only called on students to recall information. Additionally, they provide teachers with many supplemental materials, including SMART Board activities and resources to help students analyze and draw conclusions from visuals like maps and charts.
- AP Students Teach Sixth Graders - Four juniors in the AP Economics class at Melrose High School recently had the opportunity to wear the teacher’s hat for a day, as they taught sixth grade students in the elective North American Geography class a lesson on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). After providing information on the origins and purpose of NAFTA, the high school students divided the sixth graders into three teams, with each representing one of the NAFTA countries of the U.S., Canada, or Mexico. From there, the teams looked at data and case studies to determine the pros and cons of the agreement from their nation’s perspective.
- More About the AP Economics Class - This year, Melrose High School offered an AP Economics course for the first time, and its 28 students learned about important real-world topics such as exchange rates and the federal budget. Additionally, the students were able to participate in two prestigious competitions that they acquitted themselves well in. In an international competition put on by Harvard, they outperformed many schools, and in a national challenge, they ranked second in the state.

Methodology, or methods, refers to the ways in which teachers deliver information to students. Although all educators must ensure that students achieve specific academic standards, they usually have quite a bit of freedom in terms of how they teach. In other words, there is a common end goal for all students in a particular grade level, but it doesn’t matter how teachers and students get there as long as they do. Instructional methods can include lectures, direct instruction, discussions, simulations, cooperative and collaborative learning, inquiry learning, etc. Lectures are commonly used at the secondary grade levels and in higher education but are often ineffective because they are highly teacher-centered and do not engage students. If lectures are necessary to give students the proper background information, it can be advantageous to combine them with class discussions about the content. If students are learning a skill that is very new to them or that they struggled with in the past, they may benefit from direct instruction, which involves the teacher carefully modeling each step.
