Chalk Talk: Using Art as a Learning Tool
So much of school and subjects involves reading and writing. Some instruction may include having students “draw out” their ideas or work, such as for a math problem of writing a story. However, your child’s creativity can be used at home to extend learning in the classroom. Coloring, painting, stencils – all are easy and affordable ways to have your child demonstrate what they just read, how they interpret a chapter read to them or took notes on during class. By trying a different approach to learning, or reviewing, your child may begin or continue to like learning or begin to like doing the work they bring home. An upcoming quiz or test can include asking you child to draw what they visualize from a given word, sentence or paragraph. You don’t need to be a teacher to see if your child is able to interpret and demonstrate their understanding. Using art as a learning tool doesn’t have to take any more time from your child or family than normal homework or test review.
