Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Johnston District Curriculum
One core area, Language Arts, includes a curriculum of reading, listening, speaking, writing, spelling, handwriting, and vocabulary. Students are taught to make connections between what they read, write, speak, listen, and view. Language Arts instruction may also be integrated within the discipline or with other disciplines. The elementary program begins with an emphasis on “learning to read” progressing to “reading to learn.”
Mathematics standards are built around Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Elementary grades spend time on number sense and computation of whole numbers, fractions, decimals as well as geometry and measurement. Junior and high school students will apply prior learning through meaningful and purposeful practice in more advanced concepts or ratio, proportion and percent as well as algebra, measurement, statistics and probability in gaining mathematical understanding and language.

Chalk Talk: Using Games as Test Review
Games we see on television, play on the iPad, phone or computer or those board games we pull out for family night can be made into learning games before a quiz or test. Vocabulary words, characters, settings, even math problems can become categories or a “title” for a homemade Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune game. There is a little of work ahead of time – flashcards, a white board or chart paper to have the “game” on – but well worth it. Check with your child’s teacher is he or she uses games in their classroom during instruction. If so, ask for a copy or resource to help you get started in creating a home version. Even Candy Crush can become a review for an exam by asking your student to line up similar colored or coded flash cards that are randomly placed. Same colored or coded cards can be within specific categories for the subject your child is studying. Review and test preparation becomes more fun than just reading notes and memorizing facts.
