Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Victor District Curriculum

Instruction in Victor schools’ English Language Arts classes is based on standards that encourage students to read fiction and non-fiction texts closely and attentively. Once students master this basic literacy skill, the standards encourage them to use it as a base on which to develop other important literacy skills such as analytic writing.

Instruction in Victor schools’ math classes is based on standards that encourage students in the earliest grades to master core mathematics concepts such as numeracy skills and operational sense, problem modeling, and pattern recognition. The standards then encourage students who have mastered these skills to use them to solve classroom and real world problems. Science instruction focuses on content and procedural knowledge, so that students have the investigative skills necessary to solve scientific problems. Technology, which is a part of the science curriculum, has also been developed into relevant, career-oriented courses.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of a Sleep Routine

Parents know how important it is to develop a bedtime routine for their children and that if they do not get enough sleep, they are not quite themselves. The same is true for kids as they grow up, go off to college, and start in on adult life. Sleep matters. As students hit adolescence, parents should be aware if their child's sleeping time is cut into and impacting their school work or involvement in extracurricular activities. There is a strong push for students to take on as much as possible, but if it begins to interfere with the basics of life, then it should be examined. If you need to, cut out an activity or two, or cut down your work hours so that you can get enough sleep. 8 to 9 hours is a lot better than 6. Talk to your family to see if the house can be quiet after a certain hour. These and other things can help you get the rest you need.
