Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oskaloosa District Curriculum
Grade Level Benchmarks describe what we expect students to know and demonstrate at their grade level. The benchmarks are a part of each unit of instruction within each subject area. Students learn the specific content and skills to then demonstrate successful completion of the Grade Level Benchmark through assessments. This will allow students the time necessary to achieve complete mastery of the basic mathematic and literacy skills necessary to be successful in the real world.
Students and parents are provided each Grade Level Benchmark on report card so as to know the content and skills students are meeting expectations and which content and skills they are struggling to learn. Parents can also visit the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus to check on the progress of their child for each Grade Level Benchmark. The curriculum of each subject area in grade kindergarten through twelve has set benchmarks based on the development of children and teens as they prepare for college and careers.

Chalk Talk: Joining a Club
Schools and organizations offer many programs and clubs students can get involved in. Most are held after school with some meeting during the school day or even on weekends. There is a program or club for everyone and all interests. As your child grows older, they develop stronger interests in one activity or hobby and less in others. Give them an opportunity to develop those interests further in a program or club offered by their school or at a local organization. Some clubs even get involved in competitions, challenges or tournaments that take students’ interest to a higher, more critical thinking level. As students get more involved in their programs, these competitions or tournaments build confidence and inner challenge within the students they become excited about. Look into the programs and clubs within your area to see if there is something for your child. You never know what an afterschool program can lead to!
