Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Arcadia District Curriculum

Arcadia schools’ English Language Arts curriculum is based on standards that require students to develop literacy skills that they can apply in all subject areas. One of the most important strategies for elementary students deals with making connections to the text they are reading. When students can find similarities between the text and themselves or their own experiences, comprehension of what is being read is increased exponentially. Students will use the strategy of determining which information is important in all subjects, especially when studying for assessments or taking notes.

Arcadia schools’ math curriculum is based on standards that require students to develop fundamental mathematics skills that they can use to solve classroom and real world problems. These fundamental skills include, but are not limited to, numeracy and precise operational abilities, knowledge of computation tools, problem modeling, and reasoning.

Chalk Talk: The Common Core Standards

The Common Core Standards (CCS) are a single set of English Language Arts (ELA) and math standards that were developed and are shared by most states in the U.S. States developed the CCS in an effort to create a uniform approach to ELA and math education. Before the CCS each state had its own standards. Some states had well-designed standards. Some states had poorly-designed standards. This made it hard to gauge how well U.S. student were performing. It also made it hard for students to move from state to state. Some students would find that they were behind in their education when they moved from states with poorly-designed standards to states with well-designed standards. As yet, the CCS are not perfect, but they are starting to fix past education problems.
