Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Blackman Township District Curriculum
An integral part of the elementary Writing curriculum is the use of student writing portfolios. Each student’s portfolio contains all of their writing from every stage of the writing process. The use of writing portfolios has benefits for both the teacher and the student. When all of a student’s work is organized in one place, a teacher is able to see growth and areas of concern easier than when looking at each piece of writing separately. Teachers can also use these portfolios to keep track each students’ skill level.
The elementary Reading curriculum also contains a type of portfolio called a reading response journal. These journals are used for students to write about what they are reading. Students either choose a prompt given by the teacher or simply summarize what they have read recently. Some teachers may choose to make these prompts in the form of a letter and respond back to the students as well to help develop communication skills.

Chalk Talk: Creating a Home Library
A well-stocked library at home for students is one of the best things a parent can do to promote good reading habits. The first step to creating a library at home is to find adequate space and storage to display the books. A well-lit area with enough space to easily browse through books will keep students from becoming overwhelmed by the amount of books to choose from. The next step is to purchase a good amount of books to stock the library. A good rule of thumb is to have ten books available from each genre. The books should also be a good mixture of reading levels so students can find a book for whatever mood they happen to be in. While it may seem like an expensive task, there are many ways to find discounted books. Try your local thrift store or weekly garage sales where you can find used books in great shape for a fraction of the cost. Home libraries are an important investment in a child’s education as they develop a love of reading.
