San Francisco District and Curriculum
The process for teaching and learning in San Francisco Unified’s schools is explained through the California Content Standards, a comprehensive framework for subject-area learning. The core and enrichment subjects offered to students throughout their school years are detailed based on the knowledge, concepts, and thinking strategies students need to master on a grade-by-grade basis. The knowledge builds upon itself, starting with a broad base in elementary school and follows up with deeper level of analytic understanding in the content areas during high school.
The Content Standards for Math establish the expectations for learning in areas such as numeracy, measurement and quantities, and data analysis using proportions and ratios that students will develop in elementary and middle school. Once students enter high school, there are courses in Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Trigonometry, and pre-Calculus which draw upon students’ foundation in each area. This cumulative approach uses prior knowledge and reflective thinking to move students to the next step, which is a successful method for teaching higher-order topics.

Once students have taken courses in these subjects, they moves towards Physics and areas of specialization such as Environmental Science, Astronomy, Oceanography, and pre-Engineering.
The Reading/Language Arts curriculum provides students with an education in literacy and communication that looks beyond literature and encompasses areas of non-fiction that support learning in other subjects. Interesting Facts
The fortune cookie originated in San Francisco. A japanese man named Makoto Hagiwara was the genius who created the fortune cookie. Fortune cookies are made of light dough flavoured with vanilla and butter. The slip of paper containing the fortune is put inside the cookie while the cookie is still warm. Fortune cookies were first served at the Tea House in 1914. It didn’t take long after this event for the fortune cookie to be included as an essential part of the Tea House experience. Makoto Hagiwara shared his fortune cookie recipe with the Benkyodo, which is a San Francisco bakery. Benkyodo created a machine that could bake and fold the fortune cookies with the fortunes in the cookies. This allowed for the mass production of fortune cookies that were supplied to the Tea House. The Japanese culture that once existed in San Francisco has been preserved in the Japanese Tea Garden that exists to this day.
There is a myth about the San Francisco Bay. The myth is that the bay is filled with dangerous sharks that eat humans. The truth is that there are not any human-eating sharks in the bay. San Francisco Bay consists of small and mostly harmless sharks. There is a large number of Great White sharks that reside in the Pacific Ocean nearby, however they rarely swim into the San Francisco Bay. A rare occasion occurred when a Great White shark was spotted eating food in the San Francisco Bay and that was the first incident of its kind caught on camera. This event occurred in October 2015.
The color of the Golden Gate Bridge is named International Orange. This color was not included in the list of the original color options. International Orange is the color of the primer that was used to provide the steel that was to be used to build the bridge protection during transportation. The architect admired the color and thus decided to use it as the bridge’s official color. Instead of this solid colour, the US Navy has wanted to paint the bridge yellow and black stripes. The reasoning behind this color choice was the fact that the bridge could be easily spotted through fog, specifically in times of attacks.
