Western Springs District and Curriculum

The school districts strive to provide meaningful learning opportunities that will positively impact students as well as providing dedicated, engaged teachers in an environment that puts students first. By crafting a comprehensive curriculum as well as co-curricular programs, the school fosters the complete intellectual, physical, moral, and aesthetic growth of all students, regardless of learning requirements or any other qualifier. Beyond the classroom, students also participate in school and community projects.

We currently cover the following Western Springs-area school districts: Western Springs School District 101, LaGrange Highlands School District 106, and Lyons Township High School District 204.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Western Springs District Curriculum

The school prides itself on providing a rigorous, supportive classroom environment that challenges students but also allows for interventions and support when necessary. The school’s curriculum follows the Illinois Common Core Standards, which are internationally refereed guidelines intended to offer all students an equal education, regardless of location. It is hoped that students will grow to develop an appreciation of the role of learning for its own sake and become equipped to challenge the future in our increasingly global environment.

Critical thinking skills are the main focus of the curriculum. Students solve problems, evaluate and refine strategies using critical and analytical thinking. Students gather and analyze evidence which they use to support their theses when writing or conducting experiments. Opportunities are given to students whenever possible to transfer their newly acquired knowledge to life experiences.

Chalk Talk: State Vs. Private Colleges

There are advantages and disadvantages to private and public colleges. One of the most important considerations comes with tuition and the value of in-state tuition at a public college. Public colleges tend to be less expensive to attend, though there are a handful of private colleges with low price tags, and a competitive student may well qualify for scholarships and grants that will make a private college’s cost competitive. In a basic sense, private colleges approach students more like customers, which means they are more concerned with students’ experience. However, many states have an extensive network of schools and some specialize in different areas. Because of this, and because private colleges tend to be smaller than public colleges, class sizes tend to be smaller and students tend to have the opportunity to interact with professors more closely. Public colleges can be small, though, and can offer strong support services for students as well.
