Western Springs District and Curriculum
The school districts strive to provide meaningful learning opportunities that will positively impact students as well as providing dedicated, engaged teachers in an environment that puts students first. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Western Springs District Curriculum
The school prides itself on providing a rigorous, supportive classroom environment that challenges students but also allows for interventions and support when necessary. The school’s curriculum follows the Illinois Common Core Standards, which are internationally refereed guidelines intended to offer all students an equal education, regardless of location. It is hoped that students will grow to develop an appreciation of the role of learning for its own sake and become equipped to challenge the future in our increasingly global environment.
Critical thinking skills are the main focus of the curriculum. Students solve problems, evaluate and refine strategies using critical and analytical thinking. Students gather and analyze evidence which they use to support their theses when writing or conducting experiments. Opportunities are given to students whenever possible to transfer their newly acquired knowledge to life experiences.

Keeping Informed: Recent Western Springs Educational News
- Performing Arts - The Lyons Township High School Theatre Board and Music and Dance departments recently presented 'In the Heights' and maintain a full schedule that includes both dramatic and musical performances. All members of the community are invited to attend the regular events.
- National History Bee - Students at McClure Junior High have a new extracurricular activity to participate in. Emerging from the success of the National Spelling Bee and the National Geography Bee, there is a new opportunity for students interested in history to compete in the National History Bee.
- Summer Programs - To help support both learning and physical activity, the Lyons Township High School District offers students programs in academics and activity-based programs to participate in during the summer. The opportunities encompass and go far beyond credit recovery and course make-ups.

There are advantages and disadvantages to private and public colleges. One of the most important considerations comes with tuition and the value of in-state tuition at a public college. Public colleges tend to be less expensive to attend, though there are a handful of private colleges with low price tags, and a competitive student may well qualify for scholarships and grants that will make a private college’s cost competitive. In a basic sense, private colleges approach students more like customers, which means they are more concerned with students’ experience. However, many states have an extensive network of schools and some specialize in different areas. Because of this, and because private colleges tend to be smaller than public colleges, class sizes tend to be smaller and students tend to have the opportunity to interact with professors more closely. Public colleges can be small, though, and can offer strong support services for students as well.
