Donna Independent School District combines the standards as listed in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills with the experience of their faculty to provide the students with an excellent education. The district draws upon Common Core Standards to formulate the goals for Math and Language Arts, and employ a similar standards-based curricular framework for the other subjects. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Donna District Curriculum

Geometry is a part of the mathematics curriculum at Donna Schools. Students begin their education in this area by learning the characteristics of basic shapes, such as squares and circles, and then introduce them to more complex shapes like cubes, pyramids and others. Students use what they learn to find these shapes in their world around them. The students then learn how to find the size of a shape, both on the outside and the inside. This information they are able to use to measure the square footage of a room, or a yard.

Students learn the different aspects of government as a part of the social studies curriculum. When students begin school they are introduced to laws, in the form of rules, which are used in a classroom, school and at home. These examples are then explored to see how the rules came to be and the steps needed to change them. Comparisons are then made to the laws in a state and to run a country, how changing a law at this level differs from the earlier studied examples.

Chalk Talk: Encouraging Giftedness

When a parent hears that their child is gifted, their first response is pride. Quite often, the next one is how to encourage them. Some ways to help is to be aware that often these children wear their emotions on their sleeves, and are more sensitive, usually more than their classmates. Let them see that their emotions are normal for them, and then the parents can share times when they have felt intense emotions. Parents should remember when a child tests their limits, to discipline them normally. Many gifted children respond to verbal expectations and may need a reminder of the rules. If they are feeling in need of conversations with their parents, they should be allowed to talk with the knowledge that their parents will listen. Parents of gifted children need to remember that their child may be gifted but they are also a child and have the same needs as others.
