Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mercedes District Curriculum

Social Studies is the study of various aspects of the human life. In the social studies’ curriculum at Mercedes Schools, students are introduced to geographical, political, social, economic and historical events in the different regions of the world. The students begin by being introduced to the topic from areas they already familiar with. They may learn about how laws, or rules, are woven throughout their lives. As they continue, this foundation is added onto by learning the voice that a person, or population, has in the making of these rules.

Literacy is a part of the Language Arts curriculum at Mercedes ISD. They look at the elements that make up the stories they read and write, then they examine different types of writing. They look for symbolism or dramatic interpretation in works from American literature, including from the Civil War and the aftermath of it. Chalk Talk: Helping With A Child’s Homework

Parents can become confused when it comes to helping with a child’s homework. They may be unsure what the best way might be to help. Here are some ways that can be helpful. First, help a child with providing a quiet and organized place for work. This location should be away from television noise and from the computer and telephone. Provide them with the tools they may need like a calculator, resource books, and writing utensils. Also help them get into a routine that works best for them. This may be before school, right after school, or after a small break, but save activities such as television or computer time for after homework. Parents also need to remember that what works for one child may not work for another. Provide them with what works best for them to help them succeed.
