Chalk Talk: Inquiry-Based Education

Inquiry-based education involves structuring a unit of study around a central question. This type of teaching is usually found in Science courses, but can be used in any subject. Some teachers formulate the question for students before they begin their lessons so that students can be looking for important information. Other teachers may choose to allow students to come up with their own questions based on a topic. For example, students getting ready to study the Solar System might be asked why do all the planets revolve around the Sun or what would happen if the Sun suddenly disappeared. Students will then use what they learn throughout the unit and answer these questions. By using inquiry- based education models, students can focus more clearly and delve deeper into each topic allowing them greater comprehension of the content.
