Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belmont District Curriculum
In regard to the Common Core standards, schools in the region are attempting to teach subjects and offer academic programs that directly address the standards. There has also been an attempt to address the New Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The NGSS framework covers three dimensions: practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas. These core ideas will cover subjects such as engineering, earth and space sciences and physical sciences.
The goal for each subject area is that students develop the essential skills and knowledge that allow them to explore concepts and think critically about them. Each subject helps students attain a different type of critical thinking; for instance, in science students learn about the process approach to validating theories and in language arts, students develop analytic and interpretative skills to help make meaning from their reading. Each of these forms of critical thinking contribute to students post-secondary success.

Chalk Talk: When to Seek Tutoring
Some students make the mistake of seeking out a tutor only when in dire straits. However, tutoring is not only reserved for a student who needs assistance with a subject, but also for a student hoping to master or improve one’s skills in a particular subject matter. To this end, people might question why a fairly good student would opt for tutoring. The answer is that maintaining a solid academic record can be more easily achieved by having a support system in the form of a tutor. Hence, instead of waiting until you receive a less than stellar grade in English composition, for example, consider seeking out a tutor when the course actually starts. A tutor can help you prepare for the subject matter yet to be covered, so that you’re more likely to earn a better grade as a result. For students aiming to continue their education by going off to college, mastery of subject matters in high school can ease the challenging academic transition from high school to college.
