Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Poplar Bluffs District Curriculum
Students are challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This allows them to develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving strategies that are required for success in college and career. To that end, there is also a strong career and technical education program that allows students to specialize their high school education in a chosen field.
The curriculum maintains strong, clear expectations for English language arts as well as for literacy in social studies, science, and technical subjects. Because students are taught to communicate and be literate in a variety of content areas, these standards promote the basis needed for college and career readiness. Students are also taught to use technology in research and other ways, so that they will be comfortable with changes in the future. Graduates are well-prepared to face the challenges of competing in an increasingly global economy.

Chalk Talk: Personal Statement
Many colleges ask for a personal statement with a student’s application, but they often don’t explain what that is, or if they do, their explanation is vague. A personal statement is what the name implies; a short essay that gives some insight into the applicant’s personality, goals, and interests. The biggest pitfall of a personal statement is that since it is such an open-ended assignment, students often try to cram everything they can think of into the essay. It’s important to remember that even though this essay isn’t clearly defined, the same techniques should be used that apply to any essay. A clear focus and direction will help ensure readability. It is also important to show the ability to self-reflect and think forward in the essay. Narratives also afford opportunities for students to emphasize essential qualities that will be appealing to admissions officers.
