Chalk Talk: Embracing a College and Career Readiness Curriculum

In a pedagogical shift, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has recently adopted the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in All Subjects. This move is in alignment with the U.S. Department of Education and other states, which have modified their focus to prepare students for post-secondary success. In particular, the curriculum in Wisconsin focuses on five aspects of disciplinary literacy: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language. Ultimately, the objective is for students to obtain communication skills—an imperative ability for the 21st century. Not only has technology connected us in ways that are immediate and far-reaching, but it has also added a burden to keep traditional modes of communication current. School districts and parents must embrace a curriculum that gives students the tools to apply such communicative skills to any situation and any subject. A curriculum that concentrates on literacy will prepare students for their first careers and means of living outside the school environment.
