Grafton District and Curriculum
Grafton Public Schools contain six schools and roughly 2,900 students. Grafton High School’s core values are respect, responsibility, integrity, and academic excellence. Grafton describes how English language arts and math instruction has changed dramatically since the inception of the Common Core State Standards. The math curriculum is now built around a focus—rather than on tons of content that students need to learn—that cultivates foundational knowledge. In English language arts, students are reading texts of greater complexity.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Grafton District Curriculum
Math skills include procedural skills, mathematical fluency, and students’ ability to apply their knowledge to solve problems both inside and outside of the classroom. Coherence both horizontally (in classrooms across a grade) and vertically (from grade to grade) is a factor, so standards are extensions of previous learning. The final major transition involving the math standards is rigor—students must view concepts from multiple perspectives, seeing math as more than a discreet set of procedures, and perform calculations with greater accuracy and speed so that they can unlock more complex concepts and procedures.
Instruction in literacy skills exposes students to challenging texts that will prepare them for college. Secondly, it is a must that students use evidence from texts in responding to questions about what they are reading. Students are reading and building knowledge from a much greater abundance of nonfiction texts. In fact, students in grades K-5 will experience a 50-50 balance in reading literary and informational books.

- Grafton School Supply Drive A Success - To kick off the 2014-15 school year, Grafton held a School Supply Drive, which enabled over 30 boxes of school supplies to be delivered to Grafton Middle School for students in need. Supplies were also given out to families in the Food Bank. Several businesses and organizations in the community helped out with the drive, displaying the large yellow boxes in their establishments.
- Grafton High Students Organize Field Day for Youngsters - Twelve Grafton High juniors visited Belmont Community School to help out with a field day organized by a National Honor Society student. Each high schooler headed a group of elementary-aged students in playing games such as the name game, tag, and more. The games were fun, but they also helped the children learn things, such as information about one another, how they can help others on a team, and being open to multiple perspectives.
- Grafton Cheerleaders Win State Championships - The 2013 Grafton High School cheerleading squad won the state division championship in the coed division. The squad returned home to Grafton with a police escort—with sirens, flashing blue lights, and all—waiting for them. Congratulations!

Chalk Talk: What Do First Graders Learn in Math?
The introduction to the Common Core Standards for Math for grade one states that instruction should be geared towards four key areas: addition and subtraction—as well as strategies for these operations—up to the number 20, whole numbers and place value (being able to group in tens and ones), linear units of measurement, and creating and reasoning about the features of geometric shapes. Students will continue to develop their understanding of addition and subtraction, being able to solve various problems, including word problems, with various scenarios, such as putting together and taking apart, with sums or differences of up to 20. They will recognize the communicative property (e.g.: 8+3=11 and 3+8=11) and the associative property (2+6+4= 12 and 2+ [6+4)=2+10=12). They will also be able to work with equations, determining the missing whole number in an addition or subtraction problem relating two or three whole numbers (e.g.: 8+?=11). They will have a thorough understating of tens and ones as place values and, based on this knowledge, be able to compare tens and ones digits using the symbols >, =, and <.
