Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Branford District Curriculum
Elementary students are taught in subject areas that include mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, physical education, music, and art. The district has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts and mathematics that adhere to federal guidelines and of which many states have already transitioned. The district recently implemented the CCSS for Literacy in All Subjects. In alignment with the CCSS, school districts have shifted their focus to one of college and career readiness. These subject areas along with world languages carry through middle and high school with advanced coursework being offered for those who meet the requirements.
Curriculum guides are constantly reviewed and updated normally in a four-year cycle. An “Essential Curriculum” for each subject area has been developed by the district, and curriculum remains up to date and guided in student learning. Student achievement is assessed using the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.

Chalk Talk: Multiple Intelligences Theory: Highlighting Verbal/Linguistic
Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory was brought to light in the 1980s and shifted many viewpoints on the traditional idea of intelligences. Viewing intelligence as a variety of categories rather than one single general ability, Gardner chose 7 intelligences to meet his original criterion and later added 2 more intelligences to his list. Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence deals with the ability to use the spoken or written word. People with high verbal/linguistic intelligence find words, language, and writing to be their strengths. They are good at writing stories and memorizing information. Potential career paths for those verbal/linguistic learners include becoming a writer, lawyer, or teacher as these jobs can often tap into the love of words. Do you sound like a verbal/linguistic learner?
