Chalk Talk: Tips for Setting Boundaries

Most parents understand they have the intellectual upper hand over their child, but most children believe the opposite is true. A lot of it is caused by the words we say. “Don’t do that!” “That’s dangerous.” “I don’t allow that in this house!” To a parent, these words and phrases create necessary rules and boundaries. To a child, they betray a sense of worry and fear in the parent and, believe it or not, a lack of control. To gain that control and power back from your child, turn the situation around by giving advice, not demands. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” “I would be nervous to eat so much sugar before I had a test.” “If it were me, I would be careful how I talk to people who are bigger than me.” Maintaining a sense of guidance and removing any trace of emotion of control will raise your authority level in your child’s mind. Also, keeping an upbeat, melodic tone of voice will convince your child they are in control.
