Runnemede District and Curriculum

The Runnemede School District consists of three schools: Downing Elementary School and Aline Bingham Elementary School, which both serve students in Grades K-3, and Mary E. Volz School, which serves Grades 4-8. The curriculum of all three campuses is aligned with Core Curriculum Standards, which does not dictate a set curriculum but rather provides a set of standards students must master before a certain grade level. The standards are progressive in nature, which means each student should leave high school career and college-ready.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Runnemede District Curriculum

Runnemede School District maintains a strong working relationship with PARCC, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. PARCC is a group of states working together to create high-quality, computer-bases assessments in Mathematics and English/Language Arts for Grades K-12. The assessments are built around the belief that testing should be used only as a tool to enhance teaching and learning. Another chief end of PARCC is to provide parents with information that can identify areas in which a student may need extra support or instruction.

The Visual Arts Curriculum at Runnemende School District is based upon the model of 21st Century education. The district believes the arts program will provide each student with personal, social, intellectual, economic, and human growth and provide a unique and valuable avenue for expression. To that end, students are taught to relate a variety of knowledge and skills to history, culture, and the analysis of artistic purpose. Students are also expected to demonstrate an understanding of basic artistic forms.

Chalk Talk: Smart Tips for After-School Snacking

Did you know some school lunches are served as early as 10:00am? No wonder our kids come barreling home and head straight for the refrigerator door. The younger your child is, the more often s/he needs to eat. But it’s not always practical for you to be around to make healthy decisions for them. Instead, help your child plan ahead by keeping a snack schedule handy. Or, create a list of healthy snack options together. Maybe carrots aren’t a favorite go-to snack, but s/he is a fan of cucumbers and apples. Keep a few bags of sliced fruit or vegetables handy to cure those afternoon cravings. And don’t leave out the protein! Nuts or sliced cheese are great options to pair with a fruit or veggie choice and still won’t ruin the appetite for dinner. Encourage your child to make healthy choices, but don’t force him/her to eliminate favorite less-healthy items, like potato chips or granola bars. As always, balance is key.
