Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Canterbury District Curriculum
Canterbury Public Schools utilizes the Common Core State Standards in English/Language Arts and Mathematics and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium for student assessment. Students are assessed using the Connecticut Smarter Balanced Assessment in Grade 3 through 8 and 11 to determine that students are achieving the learning goals in all their core academic subjects.
Students are also encouraged to take on learning a foreign language and working towards becoming bilingual and biliterate. The curriculum has been devised such that students acquire the ability to speak, read, write, and listen in a second language, as well as develop a deep understanding and appreciation for the cultures associated with their language of study. The study of other cultures invites learners to become more open-minded and accepting of others. Additionally, students can use these cross-cultural skills to become responsible leaders who encourage understanding of others within and beyond their community of origin.
