Chalk Talk: How to Choose a College Major

Choosing an area of study in college is a big step not to be taken lightly. Although it isn’t necessary to have declared a major when you begin the process of finding a college, it is important not to take too long to decide. Some factors to consider when choosing a major include the kind of career you see yourself in, the type of work you enjoy, and the subjects you liked most in high school. Additionally, think about the skills you have or hobbies you enjoy that could translate into a career. A great way to narrow down your list of possible majors is to take an interest inventory. Sometimes high school guidance counselors will have these inventories, but if not, your college counseling center likely will. These inventories will help you identify areas of interest and aptitude that could point you in the right direction.
