Chalk Talk: The Importance of Teaching Young Children Another Language
The cognitive benefits of learning a second, or third, language are numerous. For students, learning another language can help the brain understand grammar and communication, while improving their test-taking abilities. Children who learn other languages must master linguistic conventions. For adults, knowing other languages can expand their job markets. For all people, understanding other languages can open doors to new relationships, travel opportunities, and cultural awareness. Learning other languages becomes harder as people get older. The young mind is more elastic, and many children are learning about English and the other languages at the same time. Young children learn languages easily and fluently. Due to physical, intellectual, and emotional maturation, adolescents and adults struggle more with memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility. If possible, parents should offer children tutoring lessons in other languages. If schools offer children with courses in other languages, parents can help supplement their learning by speaking in that language.
