Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hanover District Curriculum

Hanover High School offers a Virtual High School (VHS) program in which students can earn up to 2.5 credits per semester. Hanover’s VHS is an innovative program in which courses take place entirely online and give students access to non-traditional classes such as Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Screenwriting. Through this program, students gain critical 21st century learning skills through information and media literacy, online collaboration, and team-building.

Hanover has created a rubric for each specific 21st learning expectation. These rubrics contain four levels of achievement: beginning, developing, proficient, and exemplary. Each learning expectation has individual criteria; for example, the criteria for “reading actively and critically” revolve around key ideas and details, craft and structure, integration of knowledge and ideas, and text complexity. There is a matrix that shows which 21st century learning skills students should demonstrate in which content areas.

  • Third Graders Send School Supplies to Haitian Children - Through the Most Beautiful Future organization, third grade students raised enough money to send new chairs, desks, and other school supplies to students in a small village in Haiti. The Cedar students became passionate about this effort after a Thanksgiving writing prompt asked them to write about what they were thankful for, which led to a discussion about how children in impoverished countries to do not receive the same quality of education as students in the U.S. do. The Haitian students, who had to sit on the floor prior to receiving their new chairs, were beyond excited when their supplies arrived, and the organization hopes to build a school in the village in the future.

Chalk Talk: Positivity and Reading at Home

One of the key factors in students reading often at home—particularly when it comes to reluctant readers—is parents displaying positive attitudes toward literacy. Parents need to make sure that their children practice reading, but they should also encourage them to read for fun, not just because they have to. Parents should read to and with their children. They may read their own book while their child is reading to model an enthusiasm for reading. It is a good idea for them to ask their child what he/she likes to read and provide material that he/she is interested in. To avoid frustration, parents should work with their child’s teacher and/or reading specialist to provide books that are at an appropriate reading level.
