Putnam Valley District and Curriculum
The Putnam Valley Central School District (PVCSD) serves approximately 2,000 students. Available within the district is The Children’s Center, a school-aged childcare program located in the elementary and middle schools. This program offers parents and guardians before- and after-school care for children from kindergarten to seventh grade, and full-day care is available throughout school vacations. The PVCSD provides students with a curriculum that meets all New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements, in addition to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Putnam Valley District Curriculum
At all grade levels, the PVCSD offers students developmentally appropriate instruction to prepare pupils for their next level of learning. The PVCSD staff has designed the district’s curriculum maps to challenge students in core academic disciplines while introducing them to electives courses that provide 21st century skills. The district also makes available courses in English as a second language and special education. Character education is also an important aspect, which is integrated into all curricula.
The Putnam Valley High School (PVHS) works to ensure students are prepared for post-secondary career and/or college opportunities. Students choose courses to align with their goals. In addition to the aforementioned subjects, PVHS also offers library media skills, health (10-12), and specialized courses in computer technology, art, music, and core academics. Students may also choose from a variety of Advanced Placement courses.

- Theatre Students Set to Take Stage - The Putnam Valley High School TheatreWorks will perform “3…2…One-Acts” this Fall. Students will present this fast-paced comedy about adolescent life in three short acts. Throughout each year, the community is welcome to the productions of the theatre group.
- Putnam Valley Recognizes Excellence in English Language Arts - Students at Putnam Valley High School may join the English National Honor Society, a national organization that focuses on accomplishments and interests in the English language arts. Inducted members receive many opportunities, such as collegiate scholarships, local recognition, and access to social interactions.
- The Friends Network Serves Community - The Friends Network is an organization that assists adults with developmental disabilities. The Putnam Valley High School chapter serves local residents by providing them with opportunities to attend life skills classes, seminars, and social events.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of a High School Transcript
If you plan to attend college, your school counselor must submit a high school transcript to the appropriate institutions. A high school transcript typically contains three years of a student’s grade point average (GPA), course selections, class rank, and other relevant information. Because of the many different scales and schedules schools offer, counselors also provide school profiles on the transcripts. High school transcripts are necessary to the college admission process. Students should consider their academic records as important assets and should plan accordingly. High school guidance counselors and college admissions staff recommend students take rigorous coursework, as advanced a class a student can take while achieving appropriate grades (B or higher). College admissions staff also looks for trends in grade achievement. They look for signs of preparedness, which include improving grades and challenging courses. Admissions programs may be hesitant to accept a student with declining grades. If there is a legitimate reason for a decline in progress, students should ask their guidance counselors for letters of recommendation to explain special circumstances.
