Woodbury District and Curriculum
Residents in the Town of Woodbury will attend either Cornwall Central School District (CCSD) or Monroe-Woodbury Central School District (MWCSD). Both districts’ curricula adhere to the standards created by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). With its adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), state standards guide instruction by changing the dynamics of instruction, particularly in English language arts and mathematics. The focus on instruction and assessment has shifted from content-based learning to enhancing critical thinking and decision-making skills.
We currently cover the following Woodbury-area school districts: Cornwall Central School District and Monroe-Woodbury Central School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woodbury District Curriculum
The CCSD provides foundational core academic instruction in all grades, with increasing rigor and electives options as students progress to higher grade-levels. Each level builds upon previous learning to prepare students ultimately for college and/or career. High school students have a variety of options available to them, including career and technical programs, advanced placement (AP) courses, academic intervention services (AIS), and drivers education.
The MWCSD offers students developmentally appropriate instruction at all levels, with the intention of preparing students for subsequent grade levels. The primary curriculum offers general instruction that creates a base for future learning. Students receive learning opportunities in core subjects, as well as arts, music, and health and physical education. The secondary curriculum increases in challenge and variety, as students progress from sixth to twelfth grade. In middle school, students are required to take core courses, as well as art, computers, music, and health. They also have access to an assortment of “encore” classes.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Physical Education Standards
Due to the United States Surgeon General’s and other health experts’ recommendations, each public school district includes physical education in their curricula. Physical education standards are important, as they demonstrate to students the importance of physical activity and health maintenance. Children should be active to promote present health but also to encourage healthy, lifelong habits. Physical activity is said to improve muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and bone health. Additionally, people who are more physically active are more likely to have higher self-esteem and practice positive goal setting. With the increasing focus on core academic standards, administrators may overlook important subjects. However, physical education continues to be a requirement for each district, including high school graduation standards. Administrators and educators understand the value of physical fitness and should continue to do so for teaching the whole child.
